Absorbable organic halogene

BEK
Bleached Eucalyptus Kraft; bleached eucalyptus pulp.

BHKP
Bleached Hardwood Kraft Pulp

BOD
Biological Oxygen Demand; biological method for measuring oxygen-demanding substances.

Bulk
Inverted value for density expressed as cm3/g.

Chemical pulp
Pulp that is produced by cooking pulpwood with chemicals. Has higher brightness and strength than mechanical pulp.

COD
Chemical Oxygen Demand; a chemical method for measuring oxygen-demanding substances.

CTMP
Chemi-Thermo-Mechanical Pulp; development of TMP where raw material is impregnated with chemicals. Stronger than TMP.

ECF
Elemental Chlorine Free; sulphate pulp bleached only with chlorine dioxide.

EPIS
European Pulp Industry Sector.

Groundwood pulp
Mechanical pulp made from groundwood. Latency
The deformed condition of pulp fibre.

Lignin
Polymer compound consisting mainly of phenylpropane units; the main binding agent for wood fibre.

LWC
Light Weight Coated; a type of coated paper often used for catalogues and magazines.

Mechanical pulp
Pulp that is produced by means of a mechanical process for fibre separation and processing. Has higher bulk, stiffness and opacity than chemical pulp.

NBSK
Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft; bleached long-fi bre sulphate (kraft) pulp. The leading indicator of world market prices.

Norscan
Canada, US, Sweden and Finland.

Nutrient salts
Consist of various phosphorus and nitrogen compounds that have a fertilising effect in the recipient.

Opacity
Degree of opaqueness.

Scm ub
Solid cubic metre under bark, used to measure pulpwood.

Shives content
The proportion of unseparated fi bres in the pulp.

Sulphate
Method for the production of chemical (kraft) pulp.

Sulphite
As sulphate, but using a different cooking technique, different chemicals and with different chemical recovery.

Surface weight
Weight of paper per surface unit; expressed as g/m2.

TCF
Totally Chlorine Free; entirely chlorine-free bleached sulphate pulp.

TMP
Thermo-Mechanical Pulp; mechanical pulp that uses a technique in which the chips are preheated with steam.

UKP
Unbleached Kraft Pulp.

ULWC
Ultra Light Weight Coated; like LWC but with a lower surface weight.
