DOMSJÖ FABRIKER AND ROTTNEROS LOOK INTO THE POSSIBILITY OF CONTINUING DEBARKING AND CHIPPING OPERATIONS AT UTANSJÖ MILL

The debarking and chipping facility works with aspen and spruce wood and supplies Utansjö Mill with chips for its CTMP line as well as debarked and cut wood for the groundwood line. The unit currently employs around 20 people.

Domsjö Fabriker, which is located in Örnsköldsvik around 80 kilometres from Utansjö, is interested in using the unit for softwood debarking and chipping, utilising around 50% of today’s capacity, which would provide employment for about 10 people.

The reason for Domsjö Fabrikers interest in Utansjö’s debarking and chipping unit is that its own debarking and chipping capacity at the Örnsköldsvik plant is limited. The ongoing development programme, Domsjö 2010, which includes investments totalling more than SEK 500 million, will lead to increased production capacity and as a result, the debarking and chipping operation will become a bottleneck. Until this bottleneck is removed through expansion, which is expected to happen in two or three years, Domsjö Fabriker is considering possible solutions and one alternative could be using the debarking and chipping unit at Utansjö.

Both Rottneros and Domsjö Fabriker would like to find a solution that will allow Utansjö to continue operating.

“Even if it is only for a transitional period of a few years and employment will be limited to 10 jobs, it would greatly benefit the local community and Utansjö as an industrial location,” Domsjö’s Managing Director Ola Hildingsson and Olle Dahlin who is Managing Director at Utansjö Mill say in a joint statement.
